The M23 rebels, who are gaining ground in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, have been identified by the Congolese army as a mass mobilization of youth.
It comes after Félix Tshisekedi, president of the DRC, called for young militant organizations.
Major General Sylvain Ekenge, the spokesman for the DRC army said during a press conference that the country was in danger and needed its honourable sons and daughters to serve under the flag and protect the territory.
“The armed forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are already recruiting a large number of young people to serve under the flag. As I speak, there are more than 2000 of them, only in Goma.”
Considering that the M23 rebels have recently seized large areas of significant territory, government spokesman Patrick Muyaya declared: “Good neighbourliness is not always the message that others take to heart, so we must choose deterrence, which is to have a powerful army.
